ACCA Exemptions After FIA: How Many Papers You Skip

After you complete the FIA Diploma in Accounting and Business, you skip ACCA’s first three exams, the Applied Knowledge level (BT, MA and FA), and start the full ACCA Qualification at Applied Skills (ACCA Global). That is three papers you do not sit again. This guide explains exactly which papers you skip, why the exemptions are granted, and how the picture changes if you also have O-Levels, A-Levels or a degree.

How many ACCA papers do you skip after FIA?

Three. Completing the diploma level of FIA earns you the ACCA Diploma in Accounting and Business, and with it full exemption from ACCA’s three Applied Knowledge exams: Business and Technology (BT), Management Accounting (MA) and Financial Accounting (FA) (ACCA Global). You then begin the ACCA Qualification directly at the Applied Skills level, with six exams ahead of you instead of nine.

In short, the FIA route does not just prepare you for ACCA. It removes the entire first stage.

Why do you get these exemptions?

Because you have already passed the same exams. The FIA diploma papers, FBT, FMA and FFA, are identical to ACCA’s BT, MA and FA. FBT is BT, FMA is MA, and FFA is FA. So when you move from FIA into the ACCA Qualification, you are not skipping work you never did, you are carrying forward exams you have genuinely completed. If you are still new to the qualification, our guide on what ACCA FIA is explains the full structure.

What about FA1, MA1, FA2, MA2?

These are the earlier FIA papers, at the introductory and intermediate levels. They build your foundation and lead up to the diploma, but they are not separate exemptions into the ACCA Qualification on their own. The exemption into ACCA comes specifically from completing the diploma level (FBT, FMA and FFA). Think of FA1 to MA2 as the steps that get you ready for the three papers that actually carry over.

Do O-Levels, A-Levels or a degree change what you skip?

Your exemptions depend on your highest relevant qualification. Here is the honest breakdown.

Your routeWhere you start ACCAPapers you skip
Matric or O-Levels, then FIAApplied Skills (after the FIA diploma)BT, MA, FA (all three)
A-LevelsACCA Qualification, direct entryNone automatic
Relevant bachelor’s (e.g. B.Com)ACCA QualificationVaries, assessed by ACCA

Two points worth spelling out. First, O-Levels or Matric on their own do not give ACCA exemptions; the three-paper exemption comes after you complete the FIA diploma. Second, a relevant degree can exempt you from several papers, but the exact number is decided by ACCA based on what you studied.

Do FIA exemptions cost anything?

No exemption fee applies for the three Applied Knowledge papers you carry over from FIA, because you actually sat and passed those exams (FBT, FMA and FFA). This is different from degree-based exemptions, where ACCA charges a fee for each paper it exempts you from. If you are a degree holder, check exactly what you would be exempt from, and the fees, using ACCA’s official exemptions calculator before you register.

What do these exemptions mean for your timeline?

Skipping a whole stage saves real time. Instead of sitting nine exams across Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills, you sit six, then move on to Strategic Professional. Combined with an early start, this is one of the main reasons students who begin through FIA can qualify young. For the full timeline, see our guide on how long ACCA takes in Pakistan.

How many exams do you skip with ACCA after FIA?

Three. Completing the FIA Diploma in Accounting and Business exempts you from all three ACCA Applied Knowledge exams (BT, MA and FA), so you start the ACCA Qualification at Applied Skills (ACCA Global).

Which ACCA papers does FIA exempt you from?

The three Applied Knowledge papers: Business and Technology (BT), Management Accounting (MA) and Financial Accounting (FA). These are the same exams as the FIA diploma papers FBT, FMA and FFA.

Do FA1, MA1, FA2 and MA2 give ACCA exemptions?

Not on their own. They are the introductory and intermediate FIA levels that build up to the diploma. The exemption into the ACCA Qualification comes from completing the diploma level (FBT, FMA and FFA).

Do you pay a fee for FIA exemptions?

No. You are not charged an exemption fee for the three Applied Knowledge papers because you actually passed them as FBT, FMA and FFA. Degree-based exemptions, by contrast, carry a per-paper fee.

Do O-Levels or A-Levels give ACCA exemptions?

O-Levels or Matric alone do not; you gain the three-paper exemption after completing the FIA diploma. A-Levels allow direct entry to the ACCA Qualification but no automatic paper exemptions. A relevant degree may exempt several papers, assessed by ACCA.
