If you want the most established route into Pakistan’s local audit profession and you are willing to commit five to seven years including a training contract, choose CA. Both are respected accountancy qualifications. They simply suit different goals. This guide compares ACCA and CA in Pakistan on time, cost, recognition, difficulty and careers, so you can choose with confidence.

What is ACCA?
ACCA is a UK-based global accountancy qualification, recognised in 180 countries by more than 240,000 members (ACCA Global). You can start straight after Matric or O-Levels through Foundations in Accountancy (FIA), then progress through Applied Knowledge, Applied Skills and Strategic Professional exams. You qualify by combining the exams with an ethics module and 36 months of practical experience, which you complete while you study. Our guide on starting ACCA after Matric explains the entry routes.
The defining features of ACCA are flexibility and global reach. You sit exams on demand across the year, you can study while working almost anywhere, and the syllabus is built on international standards, so your skills travel.
What is CA (ICAP)?
CA, chartered accountancy, is awarded by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (ICAP). It is the most established accountancy qualification for practising in Pakistan, especially in audit. The route runs through an entry assessment (AFC), then the Certificate in Accounting and Finance (CAF), then the professional stage (CFAP) and a final assessment, combined with a mandatory 42-month articleship, usually served at a chartered accountancy firm.
The defining feature of CA is depth of local training. The long articleship means you qualify with years of hands-on Pakistani audit and tax experience, which is exactly why local firms value it so highly.
How do the structures differ?
ACCA is exam-led and modular. You move through the levels one exam at a time, at your own pace, and your practical experience runs in parallel. There is no requirement to be tied to a single employer.
CA is training-led. The articleship sits at the centre of the qualification, so your exams and your work are bound together under a training contract with an approved firm. You cannot separate the two the way you can with ACCA. This makes CA more structured but less flexible, and it is a big part of why it takes longer.
How long does each take?
This is the clearest practical difference.
- ACCA: typically 3 to 4 years, including the 36-month experience requirement, which overlaps with your exams.
- CA: typically 5 to 7 years, including the 42-month articleship. Students who clear every exam on the first attempt can finish nearer 5 years.
How much does each cost?
The two qualifications cost money in different ways, so compare the shape, not just the sticker.
- ACCA fees are paid to ACCA in the UK in pounds, and are higher per exam. For the ACCA Qualification stage, expect roughly £2,300 to £2,900 in ACCA fees, plus local tuition. See our full ACCA fees breakdown.
- CA has lower direct exam and registration fees, and, importantly, you earn a stipend during the 42-month articleship, which offsets your costs. The trade-off is time: you are committing several more years.
So CA can be cheaper in direct fees and even pays you while you train, but ACCA lets you finish sooner and start earning in the wider job market earlier. Which is “cheaper” depends on how you value your time.
Which is more recognised, at home and abroad?
Both are strong, in different arenas.
- In Pakistan, CA carries exceptional weight, particularly for audit and assurance roles and for signing off financial statements. It is the traditional gold standard for local practice.
- Abroad, ACCA leads. Recognition in 180 countries and a syllabus built on international standards make it far more portable if you want to work in the Gulf, the UK, Canada or beyond.
If your future is firmly in Pakistan’s audit profession, CA’s local prestige is hard to beat. If you want to keep international doors open, ACCA is the more flexible passport.
What about difficulty and support?
Neither qualification is easy, and both demand consistent study. CA is widely regarded as intense, partly because you juggle demanding exams with a full-time articleship for years. ACCA is challenging at the exam level too, but its flexibility lets you control your pace, taking fewer papers in a busy period and more when you have time.
In both cases, the quality of your tuition and support has a real effect on how smoothly you progress. Good teaching, exam technique and a clear study plan are what keep either journey on track.
Can you earn while you study, and what about salary?
Both let you earn, again in different ways. CA pays you a stipend through the articleship, so you earn while you train within a firm. ACCA lets you take a job in the wider market and count relevant work toward your experience requirement, so you are not tied to one employer or one sector.
On long-term salary, both qualifications lead to strong careers in Pakistan, and pay rises significantly as you move from part-qualified to fully qualified and gain experience. Both are strong investments in a finance career.
So which should you choose?
Use this simple test.
Choose ACCA if you:
- want a globally recognised qualification and the option to work abroad,
- want to finish in three to four years,
- value flexibility and the ability to study while working anywhere,
- want to start right after Matric or O-Levels through FIA.
Choose CA if you:
- are set on a long-term career in Pakistan, especially in audit practice,
- want the deepest local training and the prestige CA carries here,
- are comfortable committing five to seven years, including an articleship,
- prefer a structured training contract over a flexible, self-paced route.
There is no universally “better” choice. There is only the better fit for your goals, and it is worth talking it through with someone who knows both routes before you commit years to one.

Frequently asked questions
Is ACCA better than CA in Pakistan?
Neither is universally better. ACCA is global, flexible and usually faster, which suits students who want international options. CA is the local gold standard for Pakistan’s audit profession. The right choice depends on where you want to build your career.
Which takes longer, ACCA or CA?
CA takes longer. ACCA is typically 3 to 4 years including its 36-month experience requirement, while CA is usually 5 to 7 years including a 42-month articleship.
Which is cheaper, ACCA or CA?
CA generally has lower direct fees and pays a stipend during the articleship, while ACCA fees are higher and paid in pounds. But ACCA finishes sooner, so the real cost depends on how you value your time.
Which has better international recognition?
ACCA. It is recognised in 180 countries and built on international standards, making it more portable abroad. CA is strongest within Pakistan.
Can I do ACCA after Matric or O-Levels?
Yes. You start ACCA through Foundations in Accountancy (FIA), which has no academic entry requirements, then transfer onto the full qualification with exemptions.
Can I switch from CA to ACCA?
Yes, many students move to ACCA, and prior CA study may earn some ACCA exemptions, assessed by ACCA. Book a counselling session and we will map what you could carry over.
